Recreation Committee Meeting Minutes
Wednesday, June 25, 2008
· Marielle Harrington was introduced to the Committee as the new Healthy Communities Specialist assigned to Marysville. Marielle discussed her knowledge and professional background and excitement to be a part of the project.
· Neighborhood Park Survey model was approved by committee. Surveys will be conducted at Popcorn in Parks events and most upcoming events sponsored by parks and recreation this summer. Survey remains focused on improving neighborhood parks with access to fitness courses and diverse family play opportunities.
· Greg Erickson announced the Marysville School District has been awarded the PEP grant providing over $800,000 to the district over a three year period. The grant will provide new play equipment at all school , assist in tennis court re-surfacing, fence installations on several fields and training opportunities for the physical education staff. The Healthy Communities Leadership Committee assisted in the grant process which was submitted last fall.
· Committee recommended implementation of fitness equipment installation in concert with the Jennings Loop Trail which is under design consideration by the HC Access/Trails Committee. Fitness systems can be installed at Hickok Park, Jennings Nature Park, Jennings Memorial Park and possibly the new Grove Street Elementary school site, providing a four mile trail with four to five fitness stations located adjacent to the trail. Staff will develop designs and costs for the installation to present in September. Parks and Recreation would implement an area map as a dedicated section of the Passport to Parks brochure under development, showing the proposed fitness trails including Kiwanis Park, 152nd Pond and Jennings Loop.
· Jim Ballew reported that the new programs that evolved from the HC project have been supported and welcomed by residents. Many of our programs are at capacity and the new walking program has tripled in size. The Get Movin’ project was a great success with over 440 Marysville residents registered. The Venture Church is offering a free art camp in Jennings in July. They will also co-host the teen movie program this summer. A reminder about assistance with the All Comers Track Program in July/August. Committee members pledged support to assist.
· Kit Blue of Summit Rehabilitation announced the installation of new bike racks for their clients as ridership has increased. He is also interested in development of connections to the Centennial Trail. Staff mentioned the potential for connectivity at HWY 9 north of the new High School.
· A total of 24 Healthy Community Signs 36”x24” have been ordered for installation throughout the community. Staff will check with the Marysville School District to determine if signs can be placed at all school as well.
· Potential for addition of a crew building was discussed for a location at Ebey Waterfront Park. Staff will investigate use of land for non motorized boating related capital projects due to funding sources for motorized boating fund. Discussed the potential for boat rentals eg. Kayak, canoe etc.
