Marysville Police seek community's help in identifying arson suspect

On Aug. 1, 2019, at about 5:32 a.m., Marysville Police and Fire responded to a structure fire at Cedarcrest Middle School, 6400 88th St. N.E. When fire and police personnel arrived, they discovered a small portable building containing bathrooms, a dumpster in close proximity to the school, and a trash can were all on fire. 

The portable building was a total loss. Marysville School District officials estimate damage to the portable building to be approximately $72,000. The damage to the dumpster was estimated at $900. Additional costs associated with repairing fire and smoke damage to surrounding portables have not yet been determined. 

No staff or students were on campus at the time of the fire. 

All power and water had been cut off from the portable had been cut off from the portable building pending its removal from the property, which was to occur later that same day. The portable bathroom was adjacent to other portable buildings still in use by the school. Those portable buildings had recently been painted and renovated in preparation for the 2019-2020 school year. Several of the adjoining portable buildings sustained smoke damage that incurred additional costs to the Marysville School District. 

The Snohomish County Fire Marshal responded and assisted in the investigation. After the preliminary investigation was concluded, the fire was determined to be arson. Evidentiary items to include video of the portable building and the dumpster building were recovered. Several witnesses at the scene were interviewed. The investigation remains active and is ongoing.
