Celebrate Merrysville for the Holidays Saturday, Dec. 7

Steve Smith Grand Marshal

Longtime Marysville resident Steve Smith, co-owner of Sunnyside Nursery, will be 2019 grand marshal of the city’s popular holiday Electric Lights Parade. The parade on State Avenue begins at 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7. Holiday events in Comeford Park begin at 5 p.m. and continue afterward.

Smith is being honored for more than three decades of involvement in the Marysville community since he and his wife, Pauline, bought Sunnyside Nursery and moved here in 1989. Over the years, they grew the nursery from a small, seasonal business to a year-round full-service garden center. Sunnyside Nursery has grown Marysville’s popular flower baskets for several years. Smith also is committed to community education and advocates for the positive impacts that home gardeners can have as environmental stewards. He plans to retire soon and hand over the business reins to one of his sons. The Smiths have five children and seven grandchildren.

Merrysville for the Holidays is a free family celebration and beloved annual community event. This year the city will bring back many popular features and introduce a new one. After Santa and Mrs. Claus arrive at Comeford Park via a Marysville Fire truck, the traditional countdown will lead to the lighting of a live Christmas tree, another nearby tree in the park and other holiday decorations for a nice festive addition to what is always a fun night. The city will not light the water tower because a recent structural assessment found the walkway around the 98-year-old water tower potentially unsafe for maintenance crews. We plan to leave the new Christmas tree on site at Comeford Park to enjoy through the New Year and then relocate it to another park for a permanent home.
