1.
Can I donate to the K9 program?
Yes. The city accepts cash donations in a variety of ways:
* Citizens can donate at the front desk at the Police Department.
* Donations can be mailed to the Police Department
* Vinaccio Coffee (at the corner of 47th Ave and 4th Street) sells a special blend of coffee specifically made for the K9 unit. A percentage of the sales of that coffee goes to the unit.
2.
What do donations to the K9 program fund?
Donations received keep the unit stocked with training aids and deployment gear, and are also used to purchase dogs as needed.
3.
How much does it cost to purchase a new K9?
Prices vary depending on the amount of training the dog has received prior to purchase. Costs can also be dependent on the animal's breeding. Most K9s run between $7,000 and $10,000.
4.
Do the K9s need bulletproof vests?
Not at this time. The dogs have vests, but they are not often used as the heat generated by them can cause health issues.
5.
Who provides veterinary care for the K9s?
Dr. O’Rourke at Animal Care Center in Mt Vernon. Dr. O’Rourke has been providing vet care for the K9s since the beginning of the program.
6.
Do the K9s go home with the handlers?
Yes. The dogs live at the handler's home and can interact with the family, but they are not treated like a pet. They are cared for by the handler while off duty.
7.
How long does a dog remain an active K9?
K9s can work between eight and 10 years, depending on health or injuries. Upon retirement, the handler generally adopts the dog.
