Traffic Unit

Officer Mishler doing traffic enforcement

"We believe that having our Traffic Unit officers patrolling our streets will have a big impact in reducing traffic collisions, including fatalities by 'educating' some drivers and taking others off the road."

The Traffic Unit strives daily to make the City of Marysville's roadways and community safe. The main objective of the MPD Traffic Unit is to reduce the number and severity of traffic collisions in the city through:

  • Education
  • Engineering
  • Enforcement

This is accomplished through proactive enforcement efforts, coordination with city traffic engineering and community education programs designed to create a higher awareness of traffic safety. This approach aims to improve the quality of life in the community by diminishing social harm caused by traffic collisions and crime.

The ultimate goal of traffic law enforcement is to reduce traffic collisions. This may be achieved through the application of such techniques as geographic/temporal assignment of personnel and equipment, as well as the establishment of preventative patrols to deal with specific categories of unlawful driving behavior.

Traffic enforcement techniques are based on collision data, enforcement activity records, traffic volume and traffic conditions. This department provides enforcement efforts toward violations, not only in proportion to the frequency of their occurrence in collision situations but also in terms of traffic-related needs.

Principle: Directed traffic enforcement is assigned to the Traffic Section and the Patrol Operations Unit, yet every officer is responsible for enforcing traffic laws. The goal of directed traffic enforcement is to reduce traffic collisions and traffic violations that contribute to collisions.

Collision Investigation Unit

The division also includes a Collision Investigation Unit that is made up of officers who have specialized collision investigation training. The CIU officers investigate fatality collisions, or those collisions that result in serious damage or injury. They utilize modern methods and technology to measure and document collision scenes utilizing the FARO imaging 3D system.
