Police recognize outstanding service at awards ceremony

The Marysville Police Department honored officers, regional partners and professional staff for exceptional service during its annual awards ceremony on Jan. 24. The event highlighted acts of bravery, leadership and dedication that strengthened public safety throughout 2025.

The department’s highest honor, the Don Arndt Memorial Medal of Distinction, was awarded to a multi-agency team of Marysville, Tulalip and Arlington officers and Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office deputies for their actions during a July 2, 2025, shooting. Working under extreme danger, officers formed a rescue team and entered the home to bring the victim’s wife and children to safety, then went back in to save the man. Their actions saved lives and reassured the community during a moment of crisis. This year’s recognition also falls during the 60th anniversary year of Officer Don Arndt’s line-of-duty death in 1966.

Officer Manpreet Kaur received the Certificate of Commendation for two lifesaving events. While on patrol on July 4, 2025, she saw 20-foot flames climbing up shrubs along the front of a home and immediately went into the home to rescue residents. In another case, when she located a 90-year-old woman who had been injured and alone for more than 24 hours, Officer Kaur quickly gave immediate medical care. Quick decisions and lifesaving actions of both her and the aid crews saved her life.

Sergeant Brad Smith was named Supervisor of the Year for his leadership as patrol sergeant, K9 sergeant and president of the Marysville Police Officers Association. His mentorship, tactical expertise and work training regional K9 handlers resulting in three newly certified teams demonstrate his commitment to officer development and regional safety.

Officer Ty Welshans was honored as Officer of the Year for his strong work ethic, proactive policing and consistent support of his team. Known for thorough investigations and a positive presence on shift, he also earned multiple instructor certifications and regularly volunteers for challenging calls.

Crime and Intelligence Analyst Emily Dorscher was recognized as Support Staff Employee of the Year for her analytical expertise and contributions to major investigations.
