[ARCHIVED] Police Chief Rick Smith’s statement on SMART investigation

Marysville Police Chief Rick Smith issued the following statement today following the public release of SMART investigative records into the Oct. 24, 2014, shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School:

“My thoughts today are with the families of the victims affected by the tragic shooting at Marysville-Pilchuck High School as information from the SMART investigation becomes public. I would like to thank the SMART investigators for their efforts in compiling this report, the local, city, state and federal agencies who responded that day, and most of all, the first responders who supported us during and after this incident.

More than 2,200 pages of documents provide intimate details about the events that occurred Oct. 24, 2014, but nothing in this report changes the facts of that day. This was a homicide. It was premeditated and calculated. The shooter was intent on killing those at the table and then himself. And were it not for the actions of one teacher, there would have been additional deaths.

Our community experienced a tragedy on Oct. 24. To those who are reading this report for the first time, please remember that this is not just a news story. This is the reality that our students, our families and our community are living every day. It is still emotional and we are still healing, and for that reason we ask for your respect and your discretion as we move forward.”
