[ARCHIVED] Investigation Update

On Tuesday, September 5th at approximately 5:10 PM a 15-year-old male resident of Marysville, WA was cooperative and taken into custody on charges of Manslaughter in the second degree in the death of a 16-year-old Marysville resident.

The 16-year-old passed away in the early morning hours of August 28th 2017 at Providence Regional Medical Center in Everett, WA. His death was the direct result of blunt trauma to the left side of his head resulting in a serious brain injury he received in a “fist fight” that occurred on August 19th 2017 at about 2:40 PM, in the 8200 block of 52nd Dr. NE in a wooded lot known to many of the locals as “Spook Woods”.

It was previously reported that the mutually agreed upon fight was to settle the difference between the two juveniles. Marysville Investigators have learned that the dispute was regarding a female juvenile who had recently developed a relationship with the 16-year-old victim.

Investigators also learned that both the victim and suspect had “landed punches” on one another during the fight. However, at one point the victim went to the ground. The suspect punched, and then kicked the victim in the head while he was down. The victim never got back up. According to witnesses, they tried to wake the victim, and when he did not respond, 911 was called and Marysville Fire Department was dispatched to the scene. The investigation shows that it was over an hour that the victim laid in Spook Woods and was unresponsive to efforts by the witnesses of the fight to have him recover from being “knocked out”.

Investigators have worked with and kept the victim’s immediate family appropriately updated on the investigation as it has proceeded.

“The arrest does not signal the end of the investigation. Aspects of this case are continuing to be examined by Marysville Investigators”, said Sgt. James Maples, Investigations Supervisor Marysville PD.

The 15-year-old suspect was booked into the Denny Youth Center in Everett on a charge of Manslaughter 2nd degree.
